History of the Bercel Castle

The Bercel Castle is located in Bercel, Nógrád County, 65 km from Budapest, in a beautiful natural setting. The Castle was built in 1889, and after a complete renovation and reconstruction in 1997, it opened its doors to guests in the summer of 1998. Since then, the castle building and its annexes have been continuously renovated and improved to meet the growing needs of our time.

The Castle was owned by the Kállay family at the turn of the century. Béni Kállay was the Finance Minister of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and later Governor of Bosnia and Herzegovina. At that time, the village was called ‘Rosy Bercel’ due to the thousands of roses that adorned the garden and the facade of the Castle. Thousands of flowering plants still decorate the 35,000 square metre park around the castle, preserving this tradition.

After 1945 the State ran a primary school in the former Castle of the Kállay family. When in the early 90s the school was moved to a newly built modern building, the Castle was put on sale by the local Municipality and a French-Hungarian family bought it to create the private training centre, which is still running successfully today.

In 1998 the Bercel Castle was opened with the aim of providing an ideal venue for small groups (15-35 people) of corporate training programs, conferences, senior management meetings and private celebrations. The Castle has an intermittent operating scheme, and so can offer exclusive use to the guest groups.
